In 1978 agents from North Korea kidnapped the greatest movie star of South Korea, the actress Madame Choi, and her ex-husband, the famous film director Shun Sang-Ok.
After more or less having been kept in custody for five years, they are offered "a contract". The conditions are that they re-marry, and that they publically declare that they have defected to North Korea of their own free will.
The contract includes a gigantic film budget with everything they could possibly wish for. Of course it’s an offer that they can’t turn down.
Two years later, after having directed and produced a number of movies in North Korea, the couple manages to escape and seek political asylum in the US.
The story of this couple is interwoven with the two authors’ bizarre group excursion to North Korea in 2009. It is a smart and shocking reportage-book offering an unusual attempt at understanding this isolated country.
Nominated to Sweden’s most important literary prize, "The August Literary Award", in the category of Best Swedish Non Fiction book 2011.
