Dragomir “Gago” Mrsic is mostly known for his role as the Serbian hitman Mrado in the Stockholm Noir-series made into film 'Easy Money' (Snabba Cash) and he has just finished filming his first Hollywood role alongside Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt and Bill Paxton in Edge of Tomorrow – a Warner Bros $200 million production directed by Doug Liman.
What is less known is that Dragomir is a Taekwondo Champion and that over the years he has not only trained international top athletes such as tennis legend Martina Navratilova and NHL-pro Douglas Murray but he has also helped actors and actresses prepare for their roles including both Noomi Rapace and Rooney Mara for their roles as Lisbeth Salander in the Swedish and American versions of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
Least known of all is that in addition to his 35-years as an athlete Dragomir was convicted and sent to prison for Sweden’s largest bank robbery in the 1990s. Though he says he has no regrets, Dragomir has left that career behind and changed his life completely since he left jail.
He has worked as a trainer for the Swedish Olympic committee and he founded a workout club in Stockholm – Extreme Training – not one of those celebrity-attended-gyms with fancy spa facilities and upper-class clientele but a place where people of all walks of life are welcome to work out under Dragomir’s disciplined regimen. Or as he puts it:
On the mat at Extreme Training everyone is equal. In athletics the rules are the same for everyone, the clock ticks as fast for everybody and everybody’s sweat looks the same.
Extreme Training: From Fittja to Hollywood is a unique life-inspirational workout book based on Dragomir Mrsic’s concept MartialStrength© – a combination of the martial arts’ training features and philosophy with essential body strengthening exercise.
Back to the basics – You use your body and your own weight as your training tool while simultaneously building physical and mental strength. You can do it everywhere. You just have to be faithful to yourself.
Through eight carefully designed workout programs Gago demonstrates his training philosophy alongside with episodes from his fascinating life – all being backed up by quotes from people he has trained.
I loved working out with Gago. I have never been in better shape than when I was doing Extreme Training. Working out with Dragomir sometimes felt like torture, but it was always worth it in the end. Especially when I could slip in a punch at him ;-) I have tried and tried to find something similar in the U.S. but there is nothing like it!
Extreme Training is co-authored by USA-based journalist Majsan Boström and beautifully illustrated by the very talented photographer Daniel Ohlsson.
